MTG Adventures

About MTG Adventures

Short, narrative, single-player Magic. A scene wrapped around every fight.

What it is

MTG Adventures turns moments from stories into games of Magic: The Gathering you play on your own, in the browser. Every card is a real printed card, played by the rules, and the story plays out around the fight: the scenes before it, the moments inside it, and what it changes.

There are two ways in. The Campaign follows Avatar: The Last Airbender's Book One on a map of chapters, against opponents who think for themselves, with decks built for each moment and cards you earn along the way. The Challenges are single encounters against an opponent that follows a script you can learn, each a handcrafted puzzle of a fight, from Aang's escape from the iceberg to the young Jace Beleren on the roof of a mage-ring.

Why it exists

Magic has always been full of stories, but you rarely get to play them. The goal here is the opposite of a puzzle with a story pasted on top: you should discover a story while playing Magic.

Who makes it

Draft MTG Adventures is designed, written and directed by León Kees, a game designer; the code is written by AI under that direction. The project also serves as a portfolio of narrative systems design.

Free, and a fan project

MTG Adventures is free to play, with no ads, no accounts and no purchases, and it always will be. It is unofficial fan content, not made, approved or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast, Paramount or Nickelodeon. The legal page has the details, and the credits name everyone whose work appears in it.
